France will deploy about 70,000 police nationwide and some of Paris' major museums will close Saturday as the country braces for a fresh wave of protests after looting and unrest erupted on the sidelines of demonstrations a week ago. Protests by high school students over learning conditions sparked a movement that has since spread nationwide, fuelled by broader anger over the rising cost of living.

When 35-year-old Bekasi resident Ika Kartika voted for Prabowo Subianto in Indonesia’s 2024 presidential election, she hoped the former general would restore a “Suharto-like” era of stability, when everyday essentials were affordable and life felt more predictable. Growing up, she had often heard her parents reminisce about the “good old days” under the late strongman, whose rule had brought a sense of order to their lives. Two years into his presidency, however, rising food prices have left Ika...

Oliver Farry is pleased to welcome Andrew Smith, Lecturer in Liberal Arts at Queen Mary University of London. France's escalating social unrest has exposed a troubling disconnect between legitimate popular grievances and the government's increasingly security-focused response. Smith argues that the violence accompanying otherwise largely peaceful demonstrations reveals serious failures of policing, while President Emmanuel Macron's response offers "very little of substance." Drawing parallels with France's historic protest movements, Smith identifies a "convergence of causes" rooted in economic insecurity, educational inequalities and political paralysis. He warns that a repressive response risks deepening the crisis, calling instead for a renewed commitment to "participatory social democracy."

France experienced a weekend of shocks as weeks-long high school student protests for better study environments were hijacked by violent looters across major cities, angered by rising fuel prices and an ongoing cost of living crisis. While the rallies saw hundreds of thousands protest peacefully, clashes over the weekend led to chaotic scenes: hundreds of shops were pillaged, the historic city hall of Limoges was burned down and multiple public buildings across cities like Paris, Marseilles and...

Omar Abdullah’s victory in the 2024 elections was an inflection point not only for J&K but also for the NC, which has ruled the region for more than four decades

Violence broke out across France on Saturday during the latest day of demonstrations against conditions in schools and the cost of living.

Weeks of student protests over poor conditions in schools and rising anger over the cost of living fuelled calls for a nationwide demonstration on October 17, bringing together youth activists and supporters of the Yellow Vest movement. The main grievance was the cost of living. The protesters demonstrating against it 'didn't get what they wanted', analyses France 24's Shirli Sitbon.

Disorder broke out in cities across the country on a day in which more than half a million joined cost of living protests.

Saturday’s mobilisation in France follows calls on social media to revive the Yellow Vests movement, which emerged in 2018 against social injustice. Student groups protesting since mid-September have urged supporters to join. We discuss this with our journalist on the ground, Antonia Kerrigan, and our guest, Paul Smith, head of Modern Languages at the University of Nottingham.

Protesters across France called for street demonstrations on Saturday against rising living costs. France 24's Antonia Kerrigan reports from Paris. "The march from here to Place de Clichy isn't set to start for another hour. However, we've seen it kicking off extremely early doors. It seems that what's happened is that police attempted to block the protesters from reaching Place de la République, and we saw the use of tear gas. We've seen people running with their masks on. We also saw the use of stun grenades."

Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey wants to help British voters with the cost of living while staying within the limits of his country’s stretched public finances. To square this circle, he’s planning a series of strictly short-term giveaways — and hoping the war in Iran comes to an end.
